Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the group embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band not to include a single song with the word "A" in its title. It also included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
